ITDP collaborated with Land of Transportation Agency of Pekanbaru by initiating a workshop of BRT Management for bus operators which is as part of shaping a new paradigm to improve public transport system in Pekanbaru. This workshop was held on 19th April 2011 and was attended by 30 local bus operators, representative of Direktorat Bina Sistem Transportasi Perkotaan, Ministry of Transportation and 3 speakers from UPTD Trans Jogja, PT. Jogja Tugu Trans (Operator of Trans Jogja) and BLU Transjakarta Busway.
The BRT system, as called Transmetro Pekanbaru has been operated since 2009, are now facing a big challenge to improve the institutional performance and transport management system. ITDP has seen the government cannot cope with it by themselves, but they have to collaborate with the stakeholders, including the bus operators. Therefore, the workshop was initiated and addressed to capture ideas from the operators in order to have a sustainable BRT system. Having shared-knowledge from the speakers has also been appreciated by the operators. They have been shown how other cities (Jogja and Jakarta) dealt with the management aspect to run the BRT system properly.
The summary of workshop are as follows :
1. It was admitted that the key success of Trans Jogja and Transjakarta is the "political will" of regional leaders, therefore, Pekanbaru need to get support from the Head of the Provincial and the City authorities (the Governor and the Mayor) in order to make a succees of Transmetro Pekanbaru.
2. Government subsidies are still needed in order to ensure the sustainability of Transmetro operations.
3. Bus operators in Pekanbaru are ready to invest and need to discuss further with the Land Transportation Agency to determine the most suitable shifting strategy for bus operators from their traditional system to the new one.
