“Morning Cycling with Government Officials” |
Before starting his daily activities this morning, Governor of DKI Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo, together with Secretary of the Minister of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Syahrial Loetan, accompanied with some of provincial government officers, Central Jakarta city government officers, Bike to Work and Bappenas Cycling Club, cycled around Situ Lembang Park to enjoy the fresh morning air. The journey ended at Bappenas Office, which is located at Jalan Dipenogoro, Central Jakarta. Arriving at Bappenas Building, Governor parked his bicycle in the parking lot which is nearby the security post. After that, accompanied by Secretary of the Minister, the Governor observed another provided facility which is changing and shower room for cyclists. Each level of the building has changing rooms for the cyclists.
Governor of DKI Jakarta and Bike to Work gave appreciation and an award to Bappenas for its participation to provide facilities for cyclists. In his speech, the Governor hoped that other governmental and office buildings in Jakarta will follow to provide the similar facilities. Later he added, if the facility is available, of course, the more encouraged employees cycling to work and eventually Jakarta’s polution will be reduced.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Minister of Bappenas, Syahrial Loetan, introduced the community of cyclists in Bappenas which is so called as Bappenas Cycling Club (BCC). There are more than 100 members are registered up to now. The communities have a routine activity which is cycling to office on Friday. Moreover, they also held several up town cycling activities. The communitiy was established with a mission to have better air quality of Jakarta.
The “Morning Cycling with government officials” campaign was initated by ITDP Indonesia, in collaboration with Bike to Work Indonesia, JakTV and Indonesian Transportation Society. It is part of "Jakarta Cycling 2010" campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to inspire other government officials to endorse cycling as environmental friendly transportation. By providing the facilities, it will generate more cyclists within the officers.
